Four things worth understanding before you spend money — what gyre flow actually does, how biological filtration scales, where nitrate goes, and why frags fall off.
A conventional powerhead is a propeller in a tube. It produces a fast, narrow jet that scours whatever sits in front of it and leaves slack water in the corners — the dead spots where detritus settles and cyanobacteria take hold.
A gyre pump replaces the propeller with a long cross-flow rotor, the same principle as a squirrel-cage fan. Instead of a jet it pushes a wide, slow sheet of water along the full length of the rotor. Aimed down one side of the tank, that sheet sets the entire water column rotating in a single slow loop, so flow reaches the back wall and the sand bed rather than just the frag rack.
In practice that means more total turnover at lower velocity: corals get the gentle, variable, everywhere motion they evolved in, and you stop pointing powerheads at the glass to break up jets.
Biological filtration is a surface-area problem. Ammonia and nitrite are processed by bacteria living as a film on solid surfaces, so the useful capacity of a filter is roughly the area those bacteria can colonise — not the volume of the chamber.
Nano-Tech media are sintered ceramics riddled with pores at a scale bacteria can occupy, which puts an enormous internal surface into a small physical footprint. Bio-Spheres and the Bio-Block are the general-purpose starting point; Bio Plugs suit frag systems, and Bio Sand does the same job while forming the substrate.
The infused variants target specific problems rather than replacing the basics: Ca/Mg to hold mineral levels in soft water, chitin to accelerate the breakdown of organics, far-infrared for clarity and odour in freshwater.
Standard biological filtration converts ammonia to nitrite and then to nitrate, and there it stops. Nitrate accumulates until a water change removes it, which is why reef tanks drift upward between maintenance and why colour pales in SPS systems that are otherwise healthy.
The last step needs anaerobic bacteria, which only establish where oxygen cannot reach — deep inside a porous block rather than on its surface. The Anaerobic Block provides that low-oxygen interior, so the bacteria living in it reduce nitrate to nitrogen gas that simply leaves the water.
Those bacteria also need a carbon source to work with. The Denitrification Catalyst refills supply it, which is what keeps the process running rather than stalling after the first few weeks.
Most failed mounts come from using one adhesive for every job. Thin cyanoacrylate runs off a wet frag before it grips; putty alone has little shear strength on a smooth plug.
Use the thick cyanoacrylate glue for small frags onto plugs and rock — it cures in roughly twenty seconds and works underwater. The single-use 5g tubes in the jar exist because an opened tube of superglue rarely survives to the next session.
Silicone-based Coral Putty is the right choice for anything with mass: bridging an uneven surface, seating a colony on a rock, or building aquascape joints. It cures in about three minutes, can be kneaded and shaped in place, and will not overflow a skimmer.
For handling, carbon-fibre tweezers give control at close range with neutral buoyancy, and a long gripper keeps your arm out of a deep tank entirely.
